Seeking suggestions for INS President Elect

Wednesday afternoon I was asked to serve as interim chair of the Nominating Committee for the sole purpose of running the Committee’s work on the President Elect selection process. Joe Fins, who has been doing a great job as committee chair, has said that he is interested in being considered for President Elect. He has recused himself and our President, Nita Farahany, asked me to serve in this role.

The Nominating Committee will meet over the next three weeks to discuss candidates for this important office and we seek your assistance. The Board is supposed to interview President Elect candidates on October 1. The Committee will be moving quickly but carefully so we can provide the Board with one or (preferably) more excellent candidates, along with some background information from them.

President Elect is a three-year commitment — one as President Elect and two as President — and so not to be entered into lightly. One obvious source for possible nominees is current and past members of the Board — people who have experience with the Society at the highest level. The President Elect need not be an existing or past member of the Board. Members who have been active in Society affairs but have not been board members, as well as particularly prominent non-Society members who could bring something special to the Society, could also be considered.

The responsibilities of the President Elect are to:

  • Attend and participate in all meetings of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee.
  • Be informed about, help champion, and provide leadership regarding the Society’s mission, services, policies, and programs.
  • Assist the Board of Directors in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials as needed prior to Board and committee meetings and conference calls.
  • Represent the Society on behalf of the President as needed.
  • Attend the INS annual meeting.
  • Annually review and vote on the Society’s budget.
  • Prepare and present information at meetings on behalf of the Society as needed.
  • Work with Society staff to support outreach strategies for membership and fundraising.
  • Serve as an ex officio voting member of the Executive Committee.
  • Chair meetings when the President is unavailable to do so.
  • Contribute to a review of the Executive Director and all staff

We look forward to receiving your suggestions. Please send these to staff by email ([email protected]) no later than Friday, September 11.

Thanks for your help in this!
